Due to island’s location Sakhalin weather is quite unpredictable and changeable. Sudden and considerable change of temperature is normal for Sakhalin. You can see snow in the early summer or rain in the winter.
Summer and autumn are the best time on Sakhalin. June seldom please Sakhalin with good sunny days. Real summer starts from middle of July and lasts till middle of September. The hottest summer days temperature run up to plus 30-35°C. People escape from the heat on the seacoast. On the different costs of island temperature of the sea water distinctly differs. On the East there is Okhotsk Sea with chilled water. On the west and south there are Tatarsky Strait and Aniva bay where is water warming up to 20°C. Hot summer days local people even swim there.
Then temperature gradually goes down and turning into Indian summer with nice sunny weather. Autumn is the best season in the south of Sakhalin. There are many glorious days with crystal blue skies and breathtaking colorful autumn landscapes. You can enjoy good warm weather trough all September and October.
Then in October start light morning/night frost and in November temperature drops to 0°C and below. Though first snow might fall already in October/November it always melt and through all November and December there are bare, frozen ground and dull scenery.
In January snow completely cover the land and don’t melt any more thought sudden weather change can bring short term thaw. In certain years the snow can be extremely heavy and last for approximately five months, whilst other years the snow conditions can be moderate. Severe snowstorms entirely blocking city traffic and standing city life happen one or more times per winter. In this case people are recommended to stay at home; all schools and city establishments are closed. And only children enjoy unexpected days off and huge snowdrifts.
Winter’s weather can vary between very severe Arctic-like conditions to cold and wet European conditions. The coldest time starts from the middle of January, people call it Christ frost. During on January and February there are many blizzards with temperatures down to minus 25°C and lower, people spend a lot of time indoors. Winter usually lasts from the beginning of November to the end of April. Even so there are many days of sunshine and blue skies, when the possibilities for cross-country and downhill skiing, as well as hill trekking and photography Sakhalin winter still is endless and harassing.
Starting from March hard frost goes down, deep snow gradually melts. In April melting snow uncovers mud and rubbish laid up from early winter. It is the most depressive and unpleasant time. By May snow completely vanishes, roads dry up and appear first timid green. By end of May trees just start coming into leafs. Spring weather isn’t stable, warm days turn over cold and rainy but people still happy as long winter is over. Spring and early summer feature rainy and raw weather.
